Atheism as a way station to Materialistic Religion
Throughout history eras of waxing belief have been common. Occasionally a culture turned away from one world view and the religion that thrived in it died. However we're not all atheists today.
Atheism is certainly fairly strong today but that's because a new Myth hasn't filled the space as many Westerners have moved away from the traditional Western world view.We may be able to exist without an organizing Myth but I doubt human society would develop that way. The human desire for meaning in myth seems unalterable.
I believe that atheism may end up being by and large a way station for individuals or societies who find new Myths consistent with the new world view.
As an example I've noticed many atheists look with millennialist expectation to something called the "Singularity". It's a concept that sees evolution as progress as opposed to simple change. Eventually we or our technology will evolve to the point where something transcendent arises.
Supposedly this would be the dawn of a New Age of perfection.
It appears to me that this concept is pastiche of Monotheistic concepts and the modern view of science (evolution as progress).
The monotheistic concepts seem easy to sort out. The Singularity as the arrival of a Messianic Age complete with a messiah atheists could accept. Evolution as progress returns purpose after the loss of Monotheistic belief.
Now I'm sure we can make all types of analogies along these lines but that's not the point. It appears that human society is scarcely able to thrive without an organizing Myth. From my Christian standpoint, the loss of a myth that is true (Christ), leaves atheists searching for a Myth that at least appears possible from a materialistic world view.
